Global Aluminum Foil Export Landscape Shifts Dramatically: Germany Tops, China Falls Out of Top Five
According to the latest United Nations commodity trade statistics, the global aluminum foil export market has undergone a significant reshuffle in 2025. Germany has overtaken China as the world’s largest aluminum foil exporter, while China has fallen out of the top five.
From January to May 2025, Germany led the global aluminum foil market with exports valued at USD 770 million and totaling 117,140 tons. Italy ranked second with USD 362 million and 61,690 tons, followed by the United States (USD 308 million, 56,090 tons), Turkey (USD 265 million, 61,290 tons), and Japan (USD 245 million, 27,640 tons).
This represents a marked shift compared to the same period in 2024, when China led by a wide margin with USD 1.476 billion and 479,440 tons of exports, followed by Germany, the United States, Italy, and Turkey.
Winners, Losers, and Growth Rates
In terms of export value growth, Germany rose 23.96%, Italy surged 76.59%, the United States increased 31.06%, and Turkey nearly doubled with a 93.43% increase. Japan entered the top five in 2025, while China dropped out after leading in 2024.
Regarding export volumes, Germany remained stable at 117,140 tons, Italy grew about 11%, Turkey grew about 11%, and the United States increased 18.77%. China’s 2024 export volume of 479,440 tons fell out of the top five in 2025.
Factors Behind the Shift
Analysts suggest that China’s decline may result from rising domestic demand, higher production costs, and global supply chain adjustments. Meanwhile, Germany and Italy capitalized on emerging market opportunities.
Germany’s success is partly due to its strong manufacturing base, including major producers such as Alunorf, Norsk Hydro, and Novelis, and stable demand from the food packaging, pharmaceutical, electronics, and automotive sectors. Germany’s broader aluminum market, valued at approximately USD 556 billion in 2024, provides a solid industrial foundation.
Italy’s rapid growth reflects capacity expansion, investment in sustainable manufacturing, and the country’s traditional strengths in high-quality food packaging aluminum foil.
The U.S. market benefits from strong domestic demand in food packaging, pharmaceuticals, and electric vehicle battery supply chains. Turkey leveraged competitive production costs and its geographic proximity to European and Middle Eastern markets, nearly doubling its export value. Japan’s entry into the top five highlights its strategic shift toward high-value, precision aluminum foil for the pharmaceutical and electronics industries.
Future Trends
Trade policy changes and regional agreements, such as the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, are reshaping the global aluminum foil trade. Meanwhile, sustainability-driven purchasing patterns give exporters with environmentally friendly production a competitive edge, particularly benefiting Italy and Turkey.
Industry experts indicate that the combined effects of policy shifts, supply chain realignment, product quality, and sustainability are driving profound changes in the global aluminum foil market. Germany and Italy have established strong positions, while rankings of other countries may continue to adjust. This trend is expected to influence the competitive landscape of the global aluminum foil industry for years to come.
